Stencil Self-Portraits |
These were made by Art 1 students, grades 9-12. They studied examples of many contemporary artists who use this printmaking technique including Shepard Fairey, Kara Walker, and Banksy. They had to translate an original image with a wide range of values into a 2-value (essentially black & white) image. Among the challenges was making sure all the white or all the black areas connected, wthout losing necessary detail. Included are my demo pieces.
A series of 4 prints were required: 3 on paper, and one on the group wall.
Most chose images of themselves, which they each took on my laptop. Others downloaded images of animals to represent themselves.
Dimensions vary. Acrylic, tempera, marker on paper .
